An Alternative Path to Drug & Alcohol Addiction Treatment

California sober is a term used to describe an addiction recovery strategy where someone uses marijuana in place of โ€œharder drugsโ€ and alcohol. While this may seem like a form of harm reduction, it’s not without controversy.

Some say marijuana is a safe replacement, but people with substance use disorder often struggle with addiction due to genetics and circumstantial factors, making relapse likely.

The good news is that there are many effective ways to get and stay sober, like attending a good, insurance-covered rehab program or joining a local support group.

Read on to learn whether going California Sober is the right choice for you.

What Is California Sober?

So, what does California Sober mean? Around 2016, the term California Sober began to emerge, attracting interest and a fair amount of criticism from the recovery community.

California Sober refers to a version of sobriety [1] where an addict replaces harder substances for marijuana, which is seen as a less potent drug. However, many professionals in the recovery community warn strongly against this approach, as it can often lead to relapse or continued substance abuse.

This controversial lifestyle choice has also garnered attention among celebrities such as Demi Lovato, Steve-O, and more, who have attempted it and publicly denounced itโ€”saying it led them to relapse.

Music icon Elton John famously commented on Lovatoโ€™s choice in her most recent docuseries, stating, โ€œModeration doesnโ€™t work. If you drink, youโ€™re going to drink more; if you take a pill, youโ€™re going to take another one. You either do it or you donโ€™t.โ€

Many addiction specialists have also spoken out about being Cali Sober, with one, Dr. Akhil Anand, MD [2], claiming that with this lifestyle, โ€œYouโ€™re replacing one addictive substance with another. Itโ€™s a slippery slope.โ€

Taking into consideration that marijuana can be beneficial for some, it is seen by most people in the recovery community as an incredibly risky choice in your sobriety journey.

Does Being Cali Sober Work?

While some people claim that using marijuana to replace harder substances helps them navigate sobriety, there are serious risks associated with this lifestyleโ€”especially for those with a history of drug and alcohol addiction.

Critics of the California Sober lifestyle warn that true sobriety is the safest and most effective way to prevent relapse.

For most people struggling with substance abuse, there’s often a genetic [3] or biological sensitivity to addictive substances that makes moderation extremely difficult without proper treatment and abstinence. As a result, many individuals who use marijuana to stay sober may eventually return to drug or alcohol use, including substances they had previously quitโ€”like opioids or stimulants. For someone who once dealt with opioid addiction, this kind of relapse can be particularly dangerousโ€”even deadly.

Additionally, marijuana itself can be addictive [4] for some people. In many cases, those who identify as California Sober continue to misuse alcohol and marijuana, believing these substances are safer alternatives to harder drugs. However, using both can increase the risk of relapse or trigger uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms, even after someone has maintained sobriety for some time.

This version of California Sober may also lead to increased alcohol consumption or even a return to patterns of alcohol abuse, especially for those whoโ€™ve previously struggled to control their drinking.

Considering these risksโ€”especially for people with a history of using harmful substancesโ€”the California Sober method can feel more like a loophole than a lasting solution. For many, the risks simply outweigh the benefits.

If your goal is lasting recovery, complete abstinence under professional guidance is still the most trusted path forward.

What Is The Best Way to Manage Sobriety?

The best way to manage sobriety is by engaging in scientifically proven addiction treatment.

While the California Sober approach has been around for several years, treatment programs [5] and support groups [6] have been around for decades, and have much higher, proven success rates.

For many, though, deciding to enter a program can be challenging. For some, the idea can feel overwhelming, while others are often concerned with the cost of treatment, etc.

However, getting the help you need from a good addiction recovery program or support group can be a life-saving experience that has already helped millions of people achieve their goals in sobriety.

The law also requires that all insurance providers offer addiction recovery and mental health treatment, making the cost of rehab much more accessible. While certain recovery programs take different insurances, itโ€™s a safe bet to assume that if you (or a parent if youโ€™re 25 and under) have insurance, you can get into a private rehab center. For those without insurance, state-issued rehab centers are also available to you.

If youโ€™ve been at a full-time job for at least a year, US law also mandates under FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) that you can take paid time off of work without having to disclose why, other than that itโ€™s for health reasons. All you need is a doctorโ€™s recommendation, which a rehab admissions counselor can provide.

There are so many options available to you that are a safer path to sobriety than attempting to use marijuana to get by.
