What is Medication-Assisted Treatment?

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is a specialized treatment approach that uses medication to streamline the intensity of withdrawal symptoms and cravings for drugs or alcohol, both during detox and throughout ongoing recovery.

MAT combines the use of medications with behavioral therapy and addiction counseling to help individuals overcome addiction. The medications used in MAT work by reducing the effects of drugs or alcohol on the brain, minimizing cravings and withdrawal symptoms, and making it easier to achieve lasting recovery.
