What is 7OH?

7-OH is a naturally occurring alkaloid in the kratom plant (Mitragyna speciosa). The alkaloid was first identified in 1994 and binds to mu-opioid receptors in the brain [2], the same receptors targeted by traditional opioids like morphine.

Hydroxy 7-OH is formed when mitragynine (the primary alkaloid in kratom) is metabolized in the liver, increasing its potency dramatically.

While traditional kratom preparations contain minimal amounts of 7-hydroxymitragynine kratom, modern extraction and synthesis techniques have enabled manufacturers to create much more concentrated products. These semi-synthetic processes typically involve purifying mitragynine from kratom leaves, then chemically modifying it to produce high concentrations of 7oh kratom, far exceeding what occurs naturally [3].

How Long Does 7OH Last?

7-hydroxymitragynine effects last for 3 to 6 hours, with some people reporting lingering effects for up to 8 hours. Many factors influence the duration of the drug, including:

  • Individual metabolism and genetics.
  • Body weight and composition.
  • Liver function.
  • Overall health.
  • Dosage administered.
  • Consumption method (liquid vs. solid forms).
  • Food intake (empty vs. full stomach).

The rapid onset and relatively short duration compared to traditional kratom may encourage repeated dosing and increase the risk of dependence [4] developing.

How Long Does 7OH Stay in Your System?

7-OH has an elimination half-life of 3 hours, meaning that half the substance leaves your system during this period, and complete elimination requires up to 15 hours.

The substance can be detected in the system for much longer, though, with detection windows varying depending on the type of testing method used as follows:

  • Blood detection window – 1 to 2 days.
  • Urine detection window – 2 to 9 days.
  • Hair detection window – Up to 90 days.

Those who use 7-OH heavily or long-term experience extended detection periods because the drug accumulates in fatty tissues.

What Are 7OH Tablets?

7OH tablets are manufactured products that contain concentrated 7-hydroxymitragynine, ranging from 5 to 22mg per tablet. This is much more than the concentrations found in natural kratom leaf. 7-OH tablets often feature:

  • Color-coded identification (commonly green for lower strengths and purple for higher strengths).
  • Manufacturer logos and branding.
  • Scored designs for splitting doses.
  • Standardized dosing information.

What Does 7OH Feel Like?

7-OH produces intense analgesic effects alongside mood enhancement and sedation, similar to pharmaceutical opioids. People using the substance report 7 hydroxymitragynine effects that include pronounced pain relief, enhanced relaxation, and euphoric sensations similar to those delivered by prescription painkillers.

Pain relief occurs rapidly and intensely, with many people experiencing complete or near-complete elimination of moderate to severe pain. This property drives much of the compound’s non-medical use.

Mood elevation manifests as enhanced well-being, increased optimism, and general contentment. Some people describe this as subtle, while others encounter more marked euphoria in line with that triggered by opioids.

Relaxation and sedation increase with higher doses of 7-OH, progressing from mild calming effects to extreme drowsiness.

Anxiety reduction occurs through both neurochemical effects and secondary relief from physical symptoms. Many people report this as their primary motivation to use 7-OH.

How Long Does 7OH Take to Kick In?

The onset time for hydroxy 7OH varies by consumption method as follows:

  • Liquid extracts – 15 to 45 minutes.
  • Tablets or capsules – 1 to 2 hours.
  • Empty stomach – Effects begin 15 to 20 minutes faster.
  • With food – Slower onset but potentially extended duration.

The delayed onset with oral consumption occurs because the compound must go through the digestive system before entering the bloodstream, leading some people to take additional doses prematurely. This can increase the risk of overdose substantially.

How Strong is 7OH?

7-OH is extremely strong. The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) report [5] that 7-OH is:

  • Approximately 13 times more potent than morphine at mu-opioid receptors.
  • Roughly 10 times more potent than mitragynine, the primary alkaloid in kratom.
  • Among the most potent naturally-derived opioid-like compounds, earning this substance the nickname Gas Station Heroin.

Is 7OH Stronger Than Morphine?

7-OH is far stronger than morphine, binding to mu-opioid receptors much more aggressively than the naturally occurring opiate. This explains why the FDA and other regulatory agencies have expressed concerns about concentrated 7-OH products and why any use of the substance should be avoided.

How Long Does 7OH Withdrawal Last?

Withdrawal from 7-OH is similar to opioid withdrawal but more protracted, lasting 1 to 3 weeks. Some people report withdrawal symptoms lasting for up to 3 months, which is considerably longer than the typical 7 to 10-day acute withdrawal period associated with most traditional opioids. The timeline generally unfolds over predictable phases:

Acute withdrawal – days 1 to 7

Intense symptoms include muscle aches, insomnia, anxiety, restlessness, gastrointestinal distress, and excessive sweating.

Sub-acute withdrawal – weeks 1 to 3

Diminishing physical symptoms with persistent psychological manifestations, including depression, anxiety, and intense cravings for 7-OH.

PAWS (post-acute withdrawal syndrome – weeks to months

Subtle but lingering symptoms that include changes in mood, cognitive difficulties, sleep disturbances, and periodic cravings. Some people find that PAWS persists for months or even years after discontinuing the use of 7-OH.

How to Quit 7OH

Quitting 7-hydroxymitragynine, particularly after regular use, typically requires a comprehensive approach that includes:

  • Medical assessment and supervision – Professional evaluation helps determine the most appropriate withdrawal management strategies. Medical detoxification programs [6] specifically designed for opioid-like substances can provide the structured environment and professional support needed for successful discontinuation of 7-OH.
  • Tapering protocol – Gradual reduction in dosage minimizes the intensity of withdrawal.
  • Supportive medications – Supplementary treatment for specific symptoms, like clonidine for autonomic symptoms, or sleep aids for insomnia.
  • Psychosocial support – Counseling, support groups, and behavioral therapies address the psychological aspects of dependence.
  • Aftercare planning – Long-term recovery support prevents relapse – like all substance use disorders, 7-OH addiction is a chronic and relapsing disorder that warrants ongoing treatment.

How to Taper Off 7OH

A methodical tapering approach offers the most comfortable path to stopping the use of 7-OH. Effective tapering protocols usually include:

  • Establishing baseline – Stabilizing on a consistent daily dose before beginning reduction.
  • Systematic reduction – Decreasing dosage by approximately 10 to 15% every 5 to 7 days.
  • Slower reduction at lower doses – Tapering more gradually at the end of the process.
  • Extended timeline – Allowing 4 to 8 weeks or longer for complete discontinuation without such extreme withdrawal symptoms.
  • Symptom monitoring – Adjusting the taper rate based on the severity of withdrawal symptoms.

Working with healthcare providers experienced in substance tapering improves outcomes through personalized guidance and medical support throughout the process.

How Much 7OH is Too Much?

Determining safe 7-hydroxymitragynine dose levels is challenging due to individual variations, limited clinical research, and product inconsistencies. That said, general guidelines suggest that someone using the substance for the first time should use no more than 2.5mg, while those who use the drug more frequently may be able to use up to 10mg. There is no safe amount of 7-OH to use, though. The FDA does not recommend any use of kratom products. Risk factors for adverse effects increase dramatically with:

  • Daily use patterns.
  • Multiple daily doses.
  • High doses.
  • Combination with other CNS depressants.

What Does 7OH Look Like?

Pure 7-hydroxymitragynine appears as a yellowish crystalline powder, but people most commonly encounter it in one of the following manufactured forms:

  • Tablets – Color-coded (green for lower potency and purple for higher potency).
  • Capsules – Containing measured powder doses of 7-OH.
  • Liquid extracts – Amber to dark brown solutions.
  • Enhanced powders – Similar to regular kratom powder but with added 7-OH.

Commercial products typically include labeling with dosage information, although the accuracy of these labels is unregulated by the FDA or other agencies.

How Addictive is 7OH?

7-OH has a strong potential for addiction. The substance binds powerfully to mu-opioid receptors and triggers the rapid development of tolerance, requiring increasing doses to deliver the initial effects. This accelerates the formation of dependence, associated with the presentation of withdrawal symptoms upon cessation. Beyond this, the substance has reward and reinforcement properties similar to traditional opioids.

What States Have Banned 7OH?

Regulatory responses to 7-hydroxymitragynine vary widely across jurisdictions, with several states implementing complete prohibition of kratom and its alkaloids.

States with complete kratom prohibition include:

  • Alabama.
  • Arkansas.
  • Indiana.
  • Rhode Island.
  • Vermont.
  • Wisconsin.

Local bans exist in numerous municipalities despite state-level legality. These include:

  • Sarasota County, Florida.
  • Union County, North Carolina.
  • Malheur County, Oregon.
  • Denver, Colorado.
  • San Diego, California.
  • Oceanside, California.
  • Several Mississippi counties.
  • Various Louisiana parishes.

Colorado recently enacted the Daniel Bregger Act [7], imposing concentration limits on 7-OH in kratom products rather than complete prohibition. This regulatory approach aims to address concerns about highly concentrated formulations without completely banning traditional kratom preparations.

The FDA recommended adding 7-OH to its list of Schedule I controlled substances [8], and this classification is still under consideration. Schedule I drugs are deemed to have no medical utility and a high potential for abuse, dependence, and addiction.

Will 7OH Show Up on a Drug Test?

Standard drug screening panels (5-panel and 10-panel) do not typically test for 7-hydroxymitragynine or other kratom alkaloids. That said, some specialized kratom tests can detect 7-OH. Many drug addiction treatment programs specifically screen for kratom alkaloids with more comprehensive drug panels that include tests for mitragynine and its metabolites like 7-OH.

Detection windows for kratom products like 7-OH vary depending on usage patterns, individual metabolism, and the sensitivity of the test used, but generally range from 2 to 9 days in urine testing and potentially longer in those who use the substance heavily or chronically.

What Does 7-Hydroxymitragynine Do to You?

7-hydroxymitragynine produces a cluster of effects throughout multiple body systems through its interaction with opioid receptors and other neurological pathways.

Central nervous system effects include:

  • Potent pain-killing properties through mu-opioid receptor activation.
  • Mild stimulant effects at lower doses.
  • Sedation and relaxation at higher doses.
  • Potential respiratory depression similar to opioids.

Psychological effects include:

  • Euphoria and mood elevation.
  • Anxiety reduction.
  • Pronounced cognitive impairment at higher doses.
  • Risk of psychological dependence.

Physical effects include

  • Decreased sensitivity to physical discomfort.
  • Constipation and GI issues.
  • Pupil constriction.
  • Nausea.
  • Dizziness.

The intensity of these effects increases with dosage, intensifying its desired effects and escalating risks at higher concentrations.

Regardless of any reported benefits of kratom products, there is no safe use of 7-OH. The substance can provoke tolerance and dependence, leading to abusive patterns of consumption and addiction that requires professional intervention, starting with supervised medical detox, to promote recovery. Look beyond the deceptive marketing tactics and avoid any use of 7-OH products.
