The National Association of Letter Carriers, commonly abbreviated to NALC, provides health insurance for postal workers and their family members across the United States [1]. NALC plan members can access addiction treatment at all levels on the continuum of care when it’s considered clinically necessary for recovery.

NALC rehab coverage includes substance abuse and mental health treatment as essential health benefits. Plans cover significant portions of treatment costs, subject to deductibles satisfaction, co-payments, and co-insurance, ensuring that plan members can get effective addiction treatment without financial strain.

Does the National Association of Letter Carriers Insurance Cover Rehab?

NALC insurance covers significant portions of the costs of treatment at drug or alcohol rehab. The level of coverage offered varies according to the specifics of your plan. NALC plans offer the same coverage for addiction treatment as it does for other chronic medical conditions that require professional intervention [2]. NALC rehab coverage may involve inpatient or outpatient treatment, depending on the severity of your addiction.

Deductible amounts, out-of-pocket annual maximums, co-payments, and co-insurance dictate the scope of coverage. Most NALC insurance plans cover 70 to 90% of the costs of treatment after the deductible is met. Inpatient rehab and some other services may need authorization from NALC before the initiation of therapy.

Contact your insurance agent directly to verify your benefits for NALC rehab services. Alternatively, contact your preferred treatment provider. They may also help you with benefit verification. This avoids any unexpected out-of-pocket expenses and streamlines treatment admission.

Does NALC Cover Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment?

NALC drug rehab coverage usually extends to treatment for co-occurring disorders. Integrated treatment addresses addictions and mental health disorders simultaneously [3]. Co-occurring disorder treatment is proven to reduce the risk of relapse and improve long-term recovery outcomes.

Mental health parity laws, such as the ACA (Affordable Care Act) and MHPAEA (Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act), mandate health insurance carriers to provide coverage for substance abuse and mental health treatment at equivalent levels to coverage for other medical conditions. NALC rehab coverage includes the costs of psychiatric assessments, one-on-one counseling, group therapy, family therapy, medication management, and treatment for co-occurring disorders.

What Does NALC Insurance Cover?

National Association of Letter Carriers insurance plans typically include all levels of treatment on ASAM’s continuum of care when deemed clinically necessary [4].

Coverage may include medical detoxification for those who need assistance with drug or alcohol withdrawal. Medical professionals provide continuous clinical care and monitoring, medications to ease withdrawal symptoms and cravings, and stabilization services as required. Detoxification coverage generally needs authorization and documentation of medical necessity.

NALC plans also cover at least part of the costs of inpatient rehab, from housing and meals to therapy and medication management. Inpatient programs last 30, 60, or 90 days, depending on the severity of the addiction and individual recovery needs.

Coverage for NALC drug rehab also includes outpatient programs at varying levels of intensity, including IOPs (intensive outpatient programs) and PHPs (partial hospitalization programs). Services offered in outpatient settings include individual, group, and family therapy sessions, as well as psychiatric care.

Medication-assisted treatment programs for opioid or alcohol addictions are usually covered by NALC insurance plans when considered medically necessary for sustained recovery. Coverage encompasses FDA-approved medications, medical monitoring, and evidence-based talk therapies like CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy).

NALC rehab coverage encompasses all forms of therapy sessions in various settings. The extent of coverage for therapy depends on whether it’s determined as medically necessary by qualified healthcare providers.

Many NALC insurance plans offer coverage for aftercare services, including ongoing therapy sessions, relapse prevention programs, and sober living communities for those with volatile home environments.

About the National Association of Letter Carriers

The NALC Health Benefit Plan was founded in 1950. Originally, two members of staff served 4,116 members from a single room, but the National Association of Letter Carriers now delivers health benefits to several hundred thousand members. The non-profit is union-owned and union-operated.

In the early 1960s, NALC joined the Federal Employees Health Benefit Program. Since then, the organization has continued to provide affordable and accessible medical care through a range of benefit packages. In 2016, the NALC plan was the first FEHB plan to receive accreditation from AAAHC (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care).

NALC was approved as a carrier in the Postal Service Health Benefits Program, serving postal members, both active and retired, since January 2025.

NALC rehab benefits are the result of more than 7 decades of postal worker wellness advocacy. NALC plans offer comprehensive coverage for addiction treatment and mental health treatment.
