How Long Is Alcohol Detox?

The most important thing to keep in mind is that everybodyโ€™s journey is different and there is no clear set answer on how long alcohol detox will take. The timeline depends on how much you consume, how long youโ€™ve been drinking, your age, gender, weight, family history, and current health condition. A professional at our rehab addiction center will look at all these things when you enter our alcohol detox program at Gratitude Lodge to determine the best course of action for you.

Another important factor that could affect timing is your mental health and if you have a co-occurring disorder. A co-occurring disorder occurs when you simultaneously suffer from an alcohol abuse disorder and a mental health disorder. Further treatment is required to help with your mental health. If not treated properly, it can leave you in a vicious cycle and lead to relapse.

What Is Alcohol Detox?

Alcohol detox is the process where the body gets rid of the alcohol after you stop drinking. During detox, symptoms surface that can be physical and mental. These symptoms can be uncomfortable and even dangerous, depending on the severity. For this reason, alcohol detox is best done under medical supervision in a detox center like Gratitude Lodge.

What Are the Possible Withdrawal Symptoms?

Alcohol depresses the central nervous system, giving the body a relaxed feeling. While many find that alcohol helps with feelings of anxiety, it can impair coordination and motor skills. The brain must work to make new neurotransmitters to balance the body and stimulate the nervous system. When alcohol is removed, the nervous system becomes overstimulated, leading to symptoms such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Nausea
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Mood swings
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Sweating
  • Tremors

In severe cases, delirium tremens may occur, which includes:

  • Hallucinations
  • Illusions
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures

If not properly treated, severe withdrawal can result in heart-related complications or even death.

Medically supervised detox may include medications such as benzodiazepines to reduce seizure risk and help with anxiety. Beta-blockers may also be used to calm the nervous system. Some medications can reduce alcohol cravings by causing nausea when drinking.

These medications support the detox process until the brainโ€™s neurotransmitters readjust and stabilize.

What Is a Typical Withdrawal Timeline From Alcohol?

Symptoms begin hours after your last drink. During the first couple of days, you may experience insomnia, irritability, sweating, nausea, and in severe cases, hallucinations or seizures. Over the next few days, emotional distress, confusion, and additional hallucinations may occur.

By days six or seven, physical symptoms typically begin to subside, though mental and emotional symptoms may last for weeks or months. It is important to continue treatment in inpatient rehab to support recovery.
