Many people, especially those with a family history of addiction, have questions like โ€œIs addiction genetic?โ€, or “Am I at risk for addiction if it runs in my family?โ€.

While genetics can play a significant role in addiction, some people are more predisposed to addiction than others. While your genes and environment do contribute to addictive tendencies, genetics is just one of many factors underpinning substance use disorder, the clinical term for addiction.

Read on to learn more about the addiction gene and find out how to connect with compassionate and evidence-based care.

Hereditary Vs. Genetic Addiction

Genetics is the scientific study of genes and heredity. Genes are segments of DNA inherited from parents that determine specific traits and are located on chromosomes. Humans have about about 20,000 genes organized on 46 chromosomes, split into 23 pairs. Each person inherits one chromosome per pair from each parent randomly. Most people share about 50% of their genes with direct relatives like parents, siblings, and children.

Heredity is the process by which traits are passed from parents to children through genetic information in the DNA sequence. This transmission can influence traits such as height and eye color. While heredity can determine certain traits, not all traits are purely geneticโ€”the environment also influences the expression of genes.

Having a family history of addiction, then, does not mean that someone will develop an addiction themselves. Genetic predisposition accounts for about half of the risk, with environmental influences, social influences, and repeated drug exposure making up the other half.

Is There An Addictive Gene?

  1. Metabolic genes: ADH1B (alcohol dehydrogenase 1B) and ALDH2 (aldehyde dehydrogenase 2) are genes that govern alcohol metabolism. Variations in these genes can cause adverse reactions to alcohol which may deter alcohol use and act as a protective barrier against alcoholism.
  2. Genes linked to alcohol use disorder: The GABRA2 and CHRM2 genes are associated with the risk of developing early-onset alcoholism.
  3. Stress resilience genes: Genes like MAOA, SLC6A4, and COMT are associated with stress resilience. Individual variations in these genes can influence how a person responds to stress, potentially affecting their risk for addiction when combined with environmental factors.
  4. Genes linked to marijuana use disorder: CHRNA2 has been studied for its role in marijuana use disorder, with lower expression levels linked to increased risk.
  5. Gene linked to cocaine addiction: HIST1H2BD was pinpointed in research as relevant to cocaine dependence.

Is Addiction A Disease Or A Choice?

One of the ongoing debates in understanding addiction is whether it is fundamentally a disease or a choice.

While itโ€™s true that the initial decision to use a substance is usually made freely, what happens afterward is often beyond a personโ€™s control. Addiction is widely recognized as a chronic disease, similar to diabetes or heart disease. Substance abuse alters the structure and function of the brain, especially in areas related to pleasure and reward. This means that addiction is defined as compulsive substance use regardless of negative outcomes.

The view of addiction purely as a choice overlooks the nuanced and involuntary nature of these brain changes. After the initial use, the process of becoming addicted involves deep neurological transformations that dramatically reduce a personโ€™s control over their actions. The compulsive nature of addiction is driven by these changes, leading to behaviors that persist despite harmful consequences.

Treatment For Addressing Genetics And Addiction

Understanding the genetic factors that contribute to addiction can significantly enhance treatment outcomes. Tailored treatment plans that consider a personโ€™s genetic predisposition alongside other factors can help people to achieve and maintain long-term abstinence from drugs or alcohol. Treatments may include:

  1. Medications: Medications that are specifically chosen based on your genetic makeup to manage withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings.
  2. Behavioral interventions: Strategies to help modify behavior and manage impulses are often designed considering the genetic aspects of addiction.
  3. Preventive measures: Proactive actions, especially for those at high genetic risk, can prevent the development of addiction.

If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction and you suspect a genetic component, donโ€™t hesitate to seek help.

Call our friendly recovery specialists today at 844-576-0144 to get treatment tailored to your unique genetic profile and start your journey toward recovery.

Is Addiction Hereditary? FAQs

Is Substance Abuse Hereditary?

Yes, substance abuse can have a hereditary component. Studies show that genetics can account for about 40% to 60% of a personโ€™s susceptibility to addiction. This means that if you have family members who have struggled with addiction, you may be at a higher risk.

Is There An Addictive Gene?

There is no single addictive gene responsible for addiction. Rather, multiple genetic factors may influence a personโ€™s likelihood of developing an addiction. These genes may affect how someone responds to stress, impulsive behavior, or the rewarding effects of addictive substances.

What Should I Do If I Have A Predisposition To Addiction?

If you know that you have a genetic predisposition to addiction, focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and seek support if required. Engaging with counseling or peer support groups can help manage the risk of addiction.

My experience at Gratitude Lodge Chatwin House has been absolutely wonderful. I am so grateful for the support, compassion, and care I received throughout my journey. My case manager, James, was amazing, and my therapist, Jenn, was incredible. The entire staff was AMAZING and truly went above and beyond to support me every step of the way. The group therapy was instrumental to my recovery. It gave me the opportunity to learn from others, feel understood, and gain tools that I can continue to use when life becomes overwhelming. The outings were also so much fun and gave us time to bond and build meaningful connections with the other clients. The house itself is beautiful, comfortable, and clean, which made the environment feel safe and welcoming. One thing that meant so much to me personally was that they provided a safe and welcoming place for me to bring my cat, Widdy, along on my journey. Having him with me provided comfort and companionship during such an important time in my life, and I will always be grateful that I didnโ€™t have to go through this part of my journey without him. I want to personally recognize everyone because each person played a role in making my experience so meaningful: Liz, Mario, Ryan, Megan, Jeff, Anthony, Eva, Raquina, Laura, Dillon, Jesse, and of course Sierra. They all went above and beyond to help me on my journey, and I am truly grateful for every one of them. I hope that I didnโ€™t forget anyone, because they were all incredible. I highly recommend Gratitude Lodge Chatwin House to anyone who is struggling with mental health or substance use and is looking for treatment and support. I came away from this experience with so many valuable tools, a stronger foundation for my recovery, and an incredible amount of gratitude. Thank you to everyone at Chatwin House for being part of my journey. I will always be grateful for you all. โค๏ธ

My time at gratitude lodge has been such an amazing experience, from the staff, to the food, to all the skills Iโ€™ve learned about myself along the way. The group facilitators are one of a kind, supportive, compassionate, and they have all changed my outlook of what I want for my future. As for the staff, Vinney has been a fantastic support through this, he always made me feel at home, like I wasnโ€™t just another person passing through this house. Nixon and Maya are the best faces to see when I wake up, they are always on top of it, making sure everything is in order, and always brought warmth into my life, and a great start to the day. Tiffany is a fantastic case manager, sheโ€™s very thorough with everything you need to set up for yourself, can always give great advice on any situation you might be having, and one of the sweetest people Iโ€™ve ever met. All of my therapy sessions were so helpful, Amir always made me feel so comfortable and relaxed, I would talk to him about anything and everything. So smart and would always breaks down my problems so I really understood my mental health, and what was the cause of it. Overall, I really have hope for my future, this place and these people has impacted my life in a way I never thought was possible. I recommend Gratitude Lodge to anyone who needs treatment and a very good support system to come with it.

This was not my first time in treatment, but with the help and care of the staff here, hopefully my last. It was extremely structured, educational, and therapeutic. Vinney, Ally, Maya, Nixon, Amir, and Tiffany are people i consider staples in my recovery journey. As well as the rest of the staff there. I was guided, motivated, encouraged, listened to, and helped whenever i needed. This is a great facility that i hold near and dear to my heart and hope other people struggling with mental health or substance abuse get the privilege of attending!

I had the pleasure of touring this detox and residential treatment facility, and I was truly impressed. From the moment I arrived, I was warmly greeted by the staff and clinical team. It was clear that they genuinely care about the people they serve and take the time to engage with each individual, making you feel like more than just a number. They also have a chef on-site who was cooking while I was there, and the delicious smell throughout the house made the environment feel even more welcoming and comforting. The location is amazing--just minutes away from Long Beach, with beautiful views of the water that create a peaceful, relaxing, and therapeutic atmosphere. Overall, I was amazed by this facility and would highly recommend it to anyone struggling with substance abuse and/or mental health challenges. The staff, environment, and level of care truly stood out to me.
