Walk into Getaway Bar in Brooklyn, New York, and you could be forgiven for thinking you had stepped into any one of the many trendy cocktail bars in the neighborhood. And that is exactly how the owner and founder, Sam Thonis, is hoping you’ll feel. That’s because Getaway is New York’s first full-time sober bar – part of a growing global trend that offers people living a sober or semi-sober lifestyle a place to socialize at bars without the pressure to drink.

What Is a Sober Bar?

A “sober bar” is a type of establishment that offers non-alcoholic drinks and a social atmosphere for individuals who do not wish to consume alcohol. These venues typically provide a space where people can socialize and have fun without feeling pressured to drink alcohol. Sober bars may also offer entertainment such as live music, games, or other activities. The concept of sober bars has gained popularity in recent years as part of a larger movement towards sobriety and the creation of alcohol-free social spaces.

Sober bars are not a new idea. People in recovery have looked for places to enjoy the company of others without drinking for decades. One of the hardest parts of recovery is rebuilding your social life. Confronting an addiction often means losing friends that are still using.

Where You’d Be Staying

We strive to provide a comfortable, home-like environment during your recovery journey. Browse our facility images below to take a look at our upscale residential facilities.

Why Sober Bars Are a Great Alternative

Bar culture is a huge part of adult socializing. Unfortunately, enjoying bars when you’re in recovery can be difficult, or even dangerous. Imagine a place where you can relax, meet friends, and enjoy the atmosphere of a bar without worrying about being tempted to drink. Sound good? Then sober bars might be just what you have been searching for.

The Benefits of a Sober Bar

When Sam Thonis’ brother entered into recovery, he also began to build a new group of friends. Sam noticed that their socializing options seemed to be limited. They were confined to spaces that either closed early or were specifically aimed at addicts.

“In a place like New York with so many bars and nightlife options, there was nothing really focused on alcohol-free social environments.” Sam Thonis, Getaway Bar

He saw a gap in the market for a place that offered a real nightlife atmosphere which both addicts and those merely looking to go out without drinking could enjoy together. It was this vision that led him to create Getaway Bar and, somewhat unwittingly, becomes part of the vanguard for a growing trend that extends beyond the sober community.

A Sober Bar Is All About Atmosphere

Sam believes that a big part of what people are looking for when they go to bars is an atmosphere that most non-alcoholic venues lack. Dim lights. Curated music. The performance of a good bartender shaking up a cocktail. It’s a premise that he based his bar around, and it appears that he may well be right.

A key distinction for him is that sober bars are not aimed specifically at being healthy. “We’re not claiming that any of our drinks will improve your health. You can be sober without necessarily being a yogi.” Juice bars and kombucha bars, while non-alcoholic, curate a very different vibe to that of a real bar.

“We’re not claiming that any of our drinks will improve your health… You can be sober without necessarily being a yogi.” Sam Thonis, Getaway Bar

By offering an authentic atmosphere and carefully crafted drinks, bars like Getaway have begun to bridge the gap between people in recovery and the general public. Despite Getaway’s origins being rooted in serving those in recovery, its impact has grown well beyond that.

“We get lots of people in recovery coming in, but we also have lots of people who are just foodies and interested in the drinks, or who just want to take a night off drinking.” Sam Thonis

The bar now serves as an alcohol-free space for those in recovery to mingle with other lovers of good drinks in a true bar atmosphere. “We get lots of people in recovery coming in, but we also have lots of people who are just foodies and interested in the drinks, or who just want to take a night off drinking,” Sam explained.

Sober…ish Bars

Other bars have taken a different path to become refuges for those in recovery. Vena’s Fizz House in Portland, Maine set out to provide the best in sodas and non-alcoholic cocktails. Johanna and Steve Corman founded Vena’s Fizz House with no intention of it being dubbed a ‘sober bar’. However, they soon found themselves becoming the poster children of the growing sober bar movement.

“We like to say that our cocktails and mocktails are created equal.” Mary Jo Marquis

Due to a number of patrons sneaking in alcohol to add to their drinks, Vena’s eventually decided to acquiesce and acquire a liquor license. They began serving both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, but they still maintain their extensive list of lovingly-crafted mocktails and welcome those that are living a sober lifestyle.

“It’s really not a bar scene. I’ve been here for two years and I’ve never seen anyone get drunk. People don’t come here to drink… they come here for the experience.” Mary Jo Marquis

“We like to say that our cocktails and mocktails are created equal,” said Mary Jo Marquis, director of business development. “It’s really not a bar scene. I’ve been here for two years and I’ve never seen anyone get drunk. People don’t come here to drink… they come here for the experience.”

Accidental Sober Bar

It seems that this is the case for many of the bars that became known as ‘sober’. Some were aimed at those in recovery. Others, however, merely set out to make great non-alcoholic drinks and stumbled into the ‘sober bar’ title. However, as more and more millennials turn away from alcohol, there is a growing demand for nightlife offerings that do not center around drinking. Both for those in recovery and the new movement of ‘sober curious’ revelers.

Sober raves, pop-up sober events, and full-time non-alcoholic venues are rapidly emerging in major cities around the world.

They mostly cater to the growing trend of sober living among millennials. However, these sober bars and events also offer a new option for those in recovery. A place where they can enjoy the atmosphere of adult nightlife in the company of people that aren’t in recovery.

What Is a Sober Bar: Answered.

Addiction recovery can sometimes be a lonely experience. Avoiding alcohol severely limits your nightlife options. Due to a lack of good non-alcoholic nightlife options, addicts were forced to give up not just alcohol, but normal adult nightlife as well. Thanks to the growing sober bar trend, addicts in recovery are finally being given a place to socialize that offers a sense of normality. Take a look for a sober bar or event in your area today and learn more about everything Gratitude Lodge’s treatment programs have to offer.

What Is a Sober Bar FAQs

Are Sober Bars a Thing?

Yes, sober bars are a growing trend in some communities. These establishments provide a social environment where non-alcoholic beverages and mocktails are served, offering an alternative to traditional bars that focus on alcohol consumption. Sober bars aim to create a space where individuals can socialize and enjoy a nightlife experience without the presence of alcohol.

What Do Sober People Get at a Bar?

Sober individuals at a bar typically order non-alcoholic beverages such as mocktails, non-alcoholic beers, or a variety of non-alcoholic mixed drinks. Some bars may also offer a range of refreshing and creative alcohol-free options specifically catered to those who choose not to consume alcohol.

What Are Non-Alcoholic Beers Called?

Non-alcoholic beers are often referred to as “alcohol-free beer”, “non-alcoholic beer”, or “low-alcohol beer”. These are beer-like beverages that have undergone processes to reduce or remove the alcohol content, allowing individuals to enjoy the taste of beer without the intoxicating effects.

My experience at Gratitude Lodge Chatwin House has been absolutely wonderful. I am so grateful for the support, compassion, and care I received throughout my journey. My case manager, James, was amazing, and my therapist, Jenn, was incredible. The entire staff was AMAZING and truly went above and beyond to support me every step of the way. The group therapy was instrumental to my recovery. It gave me the opportunity to learn from others, feel understood, and gain tools that I can continue to use when life becomes overwhelming. The outings were also so much fun and gave us time to bond and build meaningful connections with the other clients. The house itself is beautiful, comfortable, and clean, which made the environment feel safe and welcoming. One thing that meant so much to me personally was that they provided a safe and welcoming place for me to bring my cat, Widdy, along on my journey. Having him with me provided comfort and companionship during such an important time in my life, and I will always be grateful that I didn’t have to go through this part of my journey without him. I want to personally recognize everyone because each person played a role in making my experience so meaningful: Liz, Mario, Ryan, Megan, Jeff, Anthony, Eva, Raquina, Laura, Dillon, Jesse, and of course Sierra. They all went above and beyond to help me on my journey, and I am truly grateful for every one of them. I hope that I didn’t forget anyone, because they were all incredible. I highly recommend Gratitude Lodge Chatwin House to anyone who is struggling with mental health or substance use and is looking for treatment and support. I came away from this experience with so many valuable tools, a stronger foundation for my recovery, and an incredible amount of gratitude. Thank you to everyone at Chatwin House for being part of my journey. I will always be grateful for you all. ❤️

My time at gratitude lodge has been such an amazing experience, from the staff, to the food, to all the skills I’ve learned about myself along the way. The group facilitators are one of a kind, supportive, compassionate, and they have all changed my outlook of what I want for my future. As for the staff, Vinney has been a fantastic support through this, he always made me feel at home, like I wasn’t just another person passing through this house. Nixon and Maya are the best faces to see when I wake up, they are always on top of it, making sure everything is in order, and always brought warmth into my life, and a great start to the day. Tiffany is a fantastic case manager, she’s very thorough with everything you need to set up for yourself, can always give great advice on any situation you might be having, and one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met. All of my therapy sessions were so helpful, Amir always made me feel so comfortable and relaxed, I would talk to him about anything and everything. So smart and would always breaks down my problems so I really understood my mental health, and what was the cause of it. Overall, I really have hope for my future, this place and these people has impacted my life in a way I never thought was possible. I recommend Gratitude Lodge to anyone who needs treatment and a very good support system to come with it.

This was not my first time in treatment, but with the help and care of the staff here, hopefully my last. It was extremely structured, educational, and therapeutic. Vinney, Ally, Maya, Nixon, Amir, and Tiffany are people i consider staples in my recovery journey. As well as the rest of the staff there. I was guided, motivated, encouraged, listened to, and helped whenever i needed. This is a great facility that i hold near and dear to my heart and hope other people struggling with mental health or substance abuse get the privilege of attending!

I had the pleasure of touring this detox and residential treatment facility, and I was truly impressed. From the moment I arrived, I was warmly greeted by the staff and clinical team. It was clear that they genuinely care about the people they serve and take the time to engage with each individual, making you feel like more than just a number. They also have a chef on-site who was cooking while I was there, and the delicious smell throughout the house made the environment feel even more welcoming and comforting. The location is amazing--just minutes away from Long Beach, with beautiful views of the water that create a peaceful, relaxing, and therapeutic atmosphere. Overall, I was amazed by this facility and would highly recommend it to anyone struggling with substance abuse and/or mental health challenges. The staff, environment, and level of care truly stood out to me.
