Where Youโd Be Staying
What Does Crack Cocaine Look Like?
Crack is identifiable by its characteristic look of being an off-white, yellowish rock. This is why crack is sometimes referred to as crack rock. These โrocksโ can vary in size and shape and look like soap shavings. Although commonly white or yellow, crack can also be brown or pink depending on the kind of cutting agent used.
The physical appearance of crack is a result of cooking down [1] powdered cocaine with water and ammonia or sodium bicarbonate and its crystallization. Other chemical fillers used to make crack are pesticides, talcum powder, laundry detergent, or cat litterโall very dangerous because they are not intended for human consumption.
Cocaine is derived from the coca plant [2], which is native to South American countries like Bolivia, Peru, and Colombia.ย ย
What Color Is Crack?
Crack has different colors depending on what the cocaine was cooked and cut with. Colors can range from clearish white, white, off-white, yellowish, light pink, beige, and light brown. The most common color of crack is off-white.
Crack Cocaine Textures
Crack cocaine textures vary. It can look like any of the following:
- Rocks
- Gravel
- Soap shavings
- Coarse powder
Crack rocks are very flaky and crumbly, but still rough like a real rock.
What Does Crack Cocaine Smell Like?
Crack cocaine is reported to smell like chemicals, burning rubber, or gasoline. This is because it is a highly synthesized form of cocaine and has been cooked and cut with chemical fillers. If the crack is very pure, it might not have as strong of a scent.
Crack Paraphernalia
Crack cocaine can be smoked or injected. The way it is taken will determine the kind of paraphernalia used.
For smoking crack, the drug paraphernalia can include any of the following:
- Tin foil
- A straw
- A lighter
- Lightbulb
- Steel wool
- Faucet aerators
- Aluminum cans
- Skinny glass tubes
- Spoons
- Stirrer sticks
Inject crack can involve any of the above items plus a needle to inject the substance and sometimes a rubber band or string tie around the arm to aid in making the veins visible for injection. Injecting crack into your bloodstream not only carries the usual risk of overdose because of the crack, but it can also lead to HIV [3] if needles are shared or dirty.ย ย
What Does a Crack Pipe Look Like?
A crack pipe is a common way to smoke crack. Crack pipes can be created from different materials, but it typically features a small cylindrical tube made of glass attached to a bulbous end. This end is usually where the crack is heated and then vaporized to smoke. The bulbous end of the crack pipe is also known as the โrose.โ

Dangers of Crack Cocaine
Crack cocaine is an extremely dangerous substance. In fact, in 2022 alone there were over 27,000 deaths that have been linked to cocaine useโand these deaths are on the rise. Crack cocaine carries the risk of addiction, overdose, and death. Sometimes, crack cocaine is laced with fentanyl, which makes it exponentially more dangerous.ย ย
Addiction Risk
Crack is a Schedule II drug, which means that it is highly addictive and has a high potential for abuse. It is estimated that there are about 500,000 people [4] who use crack each month in the US.
Crack is more addictive [5] than cocaine because it is smoked instead of snorted, which seems to develop addiction faster.
Signs of crack addiction are:
- Craving crack
- Using it in larger amounts than intended or for a longer period than intended
- A failure to fulfill major role obligations in school, work, or within your family because of crack use
- Tolerance of crack
- Continuation of use despite knowing the risks
Along with addiction comes the dangers of crack cocaine withdrawal. Crack withdrawal is also very dangerous and can lead to death in some cases when it isnโt properly monitored.ย ย
Symptoms of Crack Cocaine Intoxication
Crack is a stimulant that strongly affects the central nervous system. Signs of crack cocaine intoxication are:
- ย ย Constricted blood vessels
- ย ย Dilated pupils
- ย ย Increased body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure
- ย ย Bizarre, erratic, and violent behavior
- ย ย Tremors
- ย ย Vertigo
- ย ย Muscle twitches
- ย ย Paranoia
- ย ย Headache
- ย ย Increased energy
- ย ย Abdominal pain
- ย ย Nausea
- ย ย Restlessness, irritability, and anxiousness
- ย ย Panic attacks
- ย ย Psychosis
- ย ย Seizures
- ย ย Heart rhythm problems
- ย ย Heart attack
- ย ย Stroke
- ย ย Coma
Crack Overdose
With the risk of addiction also comes the risk of overdose. Crack overdose depends on three different factors: potency of the drug, tolerance built up to it, and the amount used. It is also important to note that crack overdose doesnโt only affect long-time, experienced crack users. First time users can still overdose if they mistakenly take too strong of a dose, if the crack is particularly potent, or if it has been laced with something, like fentanyl.
Crack overdose symptoms are:
- Feeling feverish or otherwise hot to the touch
- Excessive chest pain, especially around the heart
- Rapid heartbeat even while resting
- Uncontrollable energy, agitation, or manic behavior
- Nausea or weakness
- Hallucinations
Overdose symptoms often overlap with regular crack use side effects and crack withdrawal symptoms. This makes it dangerous because a user may not know when an overdose is happening and may not be able to identify when to call for help.
If you or a loved one is overdosing on crack cocaine, contact emergency services immediatelyโit could be the difference between life and death.
