Wellbutrin (Bupropion): Uses, Dosage, & Side Effects

Wellbutrin (bupropion) is a prescription medication used mainly to treat depression. Although all forms of Wellbutrin are safe when used as directed, the medication can cause side effects.

This guide explores the different forms and uses of Wellbutrin, as well as the complications and dangers associated with this medication.

What Is Wellbutrin?

Wellbutrin is a medication that helps treat depression. It works on the brain’s chemical messengers called norepinephrine and dopamine. These messengers help control your mood. Wellbutrin belongs to a group of drugs called NDRIs (norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitors [1]).

There are two main types of Wellbutrin:

  • Wellbutrin XL: For the treatment of major depressive disorder and seasonal affective disorder.
  • Wellbutrin SR: Only for the treatment of major depressive disorder.

Another branded form of this medication – Zyban – helps people stop smoking. However, Wellbutrin itself is not used for quitting smoking.

Benefits of Wellbutrin Pill

Despite potential side effects, there are several benefits of Wellbutrin:

  • Treats depression: Wellbutrin is effective in treating depression and seasonal affective disorder, helping to improve mood and overall well-being.
  • Fewer sexual side effects: Wellbutrin is less likely to cause sexual side effects [2] like a lowered sex drive than other antidepressants.
  • No long-term problems: Wellbutrin has no known problems from long-term use, making it a safe option for ongoing treatment.
  • Helps quit smoking: Zyban has the same active ingredient as Wellbutrin and can help people stop smoking.

What Is Bupropion?

Bupropion is the generic form of Wellbutrin [3]. This means it has the same active ingredient and works the same way but is usually less expensive. Bupropion helps treat major depressive disorder and seasonal affective disorder by improving mood and energy levels.

What Is Wellbutrin Used For?

Wellbutrin is used to treat depression. It can help if you have major depressive disorder or seasonal affective disorder. Major depressive disorder is when you feel very sad for a long time, and it affects your daily life. Seasonal affective disorder is a type of depression that happens during certain seasons, like winter. Wellbutrin helps by balancing chemicals in your brain to improve your mood and energy levels.

How Does Wellbutrin Work?

What does Wellbutrin do, then? It works by changing the levels of certain chemicals in your brain called norepinephrine and dopamine. These chemicals are messengers that help control your mood and energy levels. When you have depression, the balance of these chemicals can be off. Wellbutrin helps to restore the balance, making you feel happier and more energetic. It works differently from many other antidepressants, which often target a chemical called serotonin [4]. This unique way of working can be helpful for people who haven’t had success with other antidepressants.

How Long Does It Take for Wellbutrin to Work?

How long for Wellbutrin to work? It usually takes some time to start feeling Wellbutrin effects – the medication doesn’t start working right away. Here is a general timeline of what to expect:

  • First week: You may not notice any changes in your mood or energy. It’s essential to keep taking the medication as directed by your doctor – don’t lose hope at this stage.
  • 1 to 2 weeks: Some people might start to feel a bit better. You may notice small improvements in your mood and energy levels.
  • 3 to 4 weeks: You should start to see more noticeable changes. Your mood may improve, and you might feel more energetic and focused.
  • 6 weeks and beyond: By this time, you should feel the full benefits of Wellbutrin. Your depression symptoms should start lifting, and you should feel more like yourself again.

Be patient and keep taking Wellbutrin even if you don’t feel better right away. Everyone’s body reacts differently, so it might take a little longer for some people. Always talk to your doctor if you have any concerns or questions about your treatment.

Images of Wellbutrin

Here are some pictures of the different forms of Wellbutrin so you can identify the medication easily.

Wellbutrin Dosages

Bupropion comes in different forms: regular tablets, SR (sustained-release) tablets, and XL (extended-release) tablets.

The usual starting dose for Wellbutrin SR is 100mg taken twice a day. After 3 days, your doctor might increase the dose to 300mg per day, split into 100mg taken three times a day, with at least 6 hours between each dose.

Sometimes, the 75mg tablets are used to adjust the dose if needed. Your doctor will guide you to find the right amount for you.

Here is how you usually take each type of Wellbutrin:

Regular tablets (Wellbutrin):

  • Taken 3 times a day with doses at least 6 hours apart.
  • Sometimes taken 4 times a day with doses at least 4 hours apart.

Sustained-release tablets (Wellbutrin SR, Zyban):

  • Taken twice a day with doses at least 8 hours apart.

Extended-release tablets (Wellbutrin XL, Aplenzin):

  • Taken once a day in the morning.
  • Doses should be taken at least 24 hours apart.

For treating seasonal affective disorder, bupropion is usually taken once a day in the morning, starting in the early fall, continuing through winter, and stopping in early spring. Sometimes, a lower dose is taken for 2 weeks before stopping the medication.

Here are some tips to help you use this medication safely:

  • Take bupropion with food if it upsets your stomach.
  • Avoid taking it too close to bedtime to prevent trouble sleeping.
  • Take it at the same time(s) every day.
  • Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully.
  • Swallow sustained-release and extended-release tablets whole.

Your doctor will likely start you on a low dose and gradually increase it. It may take 4 weeks or longer to feel the full benefit of bupropion. Keep taking it even if you feel well, and do not stop without talking to your doctor, who may decrease your dose gradually.

Wellbutrin SR Dosage 75 mg

The Wellbutrin 75mg pill is used to adjust doses. Wellbutrin 75mg tablets can be used if doses of more than 300mg are required.

Wellbutrin Tablets vs. Wellbutrin Pills Dosage

Wellbutrin XL and Wellbutrin SR both have the same active ingredient, which is bupropion. However, they are different in how they release the drug into your body.

Release time:

  • Wellbutrin XL is an extended-release tablet, which means it releases the medication slowly over a longer time.
  • Wellbutrin SR is a sustained-release tablet, which means it releases the medication faster than the XL version.

Uses:

  • Wellbutrin XL: Used for both major depressive disorder and seasonal affective disorder.
  • Wellbutrin SR: Only used for major depressive disorder.

Wellbutrin (Bupropion) Side Effects

Wellbutrin, like all medications, can cause side effects. Some people may experience side effects, while others may not. It’s helpful to know what to expect and to talk to your doctor if you have any concerns.

  • Dry mouth: Your mouth may feel unusually dry.
  • Nausea: You might feel like you need to throw up.
  • Trouble sleeping: Falling asleep or staying asleep could be harder.
  • Dizziness: You might feel lightheaded or unsteady.

These side effects are usually temporary and may go away as your body gets used to the medication. If they continue or become severe, contact your doctor.

Common Wellbutrin Medication Side Effects

  • Shakiness: Your hands or body might feel shaky or jittery.
  • Anxiety: You might feel more anxious or nervous than usual.

These side effects are not typically dangerous, but if they become bothersome, your doctor might adjust your dose or suggest ways to help manage them.

Wellbutrin Long-Term Side Effects

When taking Wellbutrin for a long time, it’s vital to be aware of potential long-term side effects. These can include:

  • Changes in weight: Some people might continue to lose weight or, less commonly, gain weight.
  • High blood pressure: Wellbutrin can sometimes cause an increase in blood pressure, so regular monitoring is key.
  • Persistent dry mouth: Long-term use might keep your mouth feeling dry.
  • Ongoing trouble sleeping: Some people may continue to have trouble with sleep.

Regular check-ups with your doctor are essential to monitor these potential long-term effects. Always inform your doctor if you experience any new or unusual symptoms.

Wellbutrin Interactions

Wellbutrin can interact with other medications, which can change how it works or increase side effects. Here are some important interactions to be aware of:

  • Other antidepressants: Taking Wellbutrin with other antidepressants can increase the risk of side effects [5].
  • Blood thinners: Medicines like warfarin can interact with Wellbutrin, affecting how your blood clots.
  • Seizure medications: Some drugs used to treat seizures can interact with Wellbutrin, increasing the risk of seizures.
  • Alcohol: Drinking alcohol while taking Wellbutrin can increase the risk of seizures and other side effects.
  • Certain antibiotics: Some antibiotics can interact with Wellbutrin, affecting how well it works.

Always tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including over-the-counter medicines and supplements. This helps your doctor manage and prevent interactions.

Wellbutrin Precautions

There are several precautions to keep in mind before taking Wellbutrin for anxiety or depression:

  • Allergies: If you are allergic to bupropion or any other ingredients in Wellbutrin, you should not take it.
  • Medical history: Tell your doctor if you have a history of seizures, eating disorders, or head injuries, as Wellbutrin can increase the risk of seizures.
  • Blood pressure: Wellbutrin can raise blood pressure, so your doctor may need to monitor it regularly.
  • Mental health: If you have bipolar disorder, Wellbutrin may trigger manic episodes.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss the risks and benefits of Wellbutrin with your doctor.

Following these precautions can help ensure that Wellbutrin is safe and effective for you.

Dangers of Taking Wellbutrin Antidepressant

While Wellbutrin can be highly effective for treating depression, there are some dangers to be aware of:

  • Seizures: One of the most serious risks is an increased chance of seizures, especially at higher doses.
  • Mental health changes: Some people may experience mood changes, including increased depression or suicidal thoughts, especially when first starting the medication.
  • Allergic reactions: Serious allergic reactions can occur, leading to rash, itching, swelling, or trouble breathing.
  • High blood pressure: Wellbutrin can cause a significant increase in blood pressure.
  • Eye problems: In rare cases, Wellbutrin can cause eye pain, vision changes, or swelling around the eyes.

Monitor your health and report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor right away. They can help you weigh the benefits and risks of taking Wellbutrin.

Addiction Risks

Wellbutrin is not known to be addictive, but you should use it as prescribed by your doctor. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Follow directions: Always take Wellbutrin exactly as your doctor tells you. Do not take more or less than prescribed.
  • No extra doses: Do not take extra doses if you miss one. Just take your next dose at the regular time.
  • Talk to your doctor: If you feel like you need to take more of the medication to get the same effect, talk to your doctor. This could be a sign that your treatment needs to be adjusted.
  • Monitor your use: Keep track of how you feel while taking Wellbutrin. If you notice any unusual cravings or behaviors, tell your doctor.

By following these guidelines, you can reduce the risk of misuse and ensure that Wellbutrin works safely and effectively for you.
